LOCAL APPLE FARMER DONATES 1600 POUNDS OF APPLES IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 23rd, 2020

LOCAL APPLE FARMER DONATES 1600 POUNDS OF APPLES IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19

Hamilton, ON: Hugh Drummond of Drummond Farms has donated 1600 lbs of apples to the Good Shepherd Venture Centre in support of their response to COVD-19 and storing another 6400 lbs of Great Big Crunch apples to be picked up at a later date when the Venture centre has space.  After the Great Big Crunch, a student nutrition and food literacy initiative hosted by Tastebuds, Hamilton’s Student Nutrition Collaborative had to be cancelled in light of school closures, the Waterdown-based apple farmer decided to help get nutritious foods into the local community.

Tastebuds’ annual Great Big Crunch, originally scheduled for Thursday, March 26th, 2020, is a special day of food education where students are given the opportunity to take a synchronized crunch into an apple while learning about healthy snacking and local food. Crunchers assemble together and after a countdown, everyone bites into their apple simultaneously, making a great big “crunch!”. The event draws attention to the 130 student nutrition programs in 109 locations across Hamilton that serve over 25,000 students every school day.

The Waterdown based apple farmer had planned on donating the apples to nutrition programs participating in the Great Big Crunch. As the COVID-19 crisis led to the closure of schools and the cancellation of the Great Big Crunch, the apples have since been redirected to the Good Shepherd Venture Centre to support their initiatives to address community needs during this time. Drummond Farms has been a long-time supporter of Tastebuds and the owner, Hugh, enjoys attending schools during the Great Big Crunch to educate students about apples and local food.

Tastebuds, Hamilton’s Student Nutrition Collaborative is a partnership of community agencies and community members that supports and facilitates local student nutrition programs for children and youth in Hamilton.
